BRONX, NYC (SMI-GLOBAL-SPORTS-JULY 28-29, 2024)-NYCFC defeated Queretaro
( Liga MX, Mexico) 4-3, in penalty shoot-out on its opening match in Group L, claiming its first 3-points of the 2024 Leagues Cup and during a Sunday's evening game at legendary Yankees Stadium in NYC.

The Leagues Cup is an annual North American soccer tournament during the the summer across major cities in the US, where 47-club teams combined from the MLS (USA), Canada & MX Liga ( MX League in Mexico) compete 
in a World Cup-style tournament for a month during the leagues recess sanctioned by Concacaf.

 
Twenty-nine MLS teams and 18 Liga MX clubs participate every year playing 77-matches with a group stage divided in two regions (East & West), follow by a knockout elimination stage until the champion is crowned.

In addition after the tournament closure, the top three teams will receive automatic bids into Concacaf Champions Cup with a chance to represent the Confederation at the FIFA Club World Cup.

The 2024 Leagues Cup will run from July 26 to August 25, with matches plaed in the US and Canada.

NYCFC started the game firing on all cylinder with two offensive attacks barely missing the back of the net in span 3', during the first 20-minute of the game.

Midfielder Justin Haak received a ball from a corner kick inside the 6-yard box and tapped the ball to the hands of goalkeeper Guillermo Allison.

Two minutes later, in a counter-attack through the right-side field midfielder Maxi Moralez centered a perfect pass to the top of the 6-yard box, finding defender Christian McFarlane who headed it  to goal but it bounce-off goalkeeper Allison's gloves back on the pitch for his second sensational save of the game at 21' mark.

The Boys in Blue kept the pressure with back to back offensive-attacks in span of 10', Talles Magno headed it to goal after receiving a center pass inside the 18, from forward Julian Fernandez landing to the hands of goalkeeper Allison at 32', mark.

Ten minute later,  a counter-attack through the right-side field, once again Julian Fernandez centered a pass inside the penalty box, finding Maxi Moralez who shot missing the target back to Fernandez who kicked a right-footed missing wide to send both teams to the locker-rooms scoreless at the half.

In the second half, both teams traded counter-attacks without any major danger at either goal ending the game scoreless 0-0, and sending the game to a shootout penalty kicks to determine the winner.

In the penalty shots, Alonso Martinez, Thiago Martins, Alexi Moralez, Jovan Mijatovic scored for NYC and goalkeeper Luis Barraza stopped a shot from Ronaldo Cisnero to secure the victory of 4-3, for the Boys in Blue over Queretaro.
 
Pablo Barrera, Samuel Sosa, Federico Lertora, scored while Kevin Escamilla (Missed), Ronaldo Cisnero (Missed) for the Queretaro in the loss.
