BRONX, NY(SMI-GLOBAL-SPORTS, SEPT 16, 2023)-NYCFC collided with the NYRedBulls in the 26th-edition of the "Hudson River Derby", with the match ending in a scoreless draw & each team earning a point in MLS East standings, on beautiful Saturday's afternoon game at Legendary Yankees Stadium, in the Bronx, NYC.
With the draw, the NYReBulls lead the series 11-8-4, overall against NYCFC since they started playing in 2015.
Both teams are in search for a playoff berth with less than 6-games remaining in the 2023 MLS season. The Boys in Blue find themselves in 12th-place and 31-points, 2-points behind Chicago and 4-points of DC United with 5-games left to play and two against these two teams that will give them the chance to compete for the final 2-spots of the MLS Post-season play.
In the other hand, the NYRedBulls are in 13th-place, and 30-points with 6-games remaining, and also are scheduled to play against Chicago and DC United to play catch-up and compete for the final 2-playoff spot as well.
NYRedbulls' offensive attack took the initiative from the start with striker Elias Manoel having 3-chances in the first half to open the score but missed in all of them. First, in a counter-attack inside the 18', kicked a hard right-footed that deflected out bounce off the goalkeeper chest Matt Freese at 3' minute of the game.
Two-minutes later, in another counter-attack through the right-side field just outside the box, Tom Barlow headed a center ball inside the box finding Manoel who shot a canon but it went wide just barely missed the left-goal post. And finally in a breakaway through the middle, NYRedbulls' midfielder Luquinhas passed the ball to Manoel who was on the run inside the penalty box and shot a wide left-footed sending the ball over the crossbar to closed-out the first half 0-0.
In the second half, NYFC went to the offensive in 4-different occasion but the ball never found the back of the net. Julian Fernadez on a counter-attack through the left-side field, recieved the ball from Alfredo Morales but shot wide over the crossbar at 71' minute.
The Boys in Blue kept the pressure, Monsef Bakrar in a breakaway found a loose ball inside the 6-yard box and shot a left-footed to the sky missing a clear chance to score at 87' minute, and in stoppage time Bakrar once again during a corner kick center pass inside the box headed the ball that ended in the hands of goalkeeper Carlos Coronel for the final score of 0-0.
